Introduction

Statistics is a great mathematical discipline with many applications for analyzing and processing realworld data. However, it is also complex and requires a great extent of abstract thinking to understand thealgorithms and how to use them. In addition, interpreting statistical results in their full meaning can be difficult for nonprofessionals. But, a lot of people working and specializing in different fields than statisticsoften use statistical results to guide them in their work. This clash between professions can give some seriousproblems regarding communication and understanding the viewpoint of the other. Most common is thescenario where one group’s view of the world is founded in real practical issues, while the other is used toapproach issues through abstract thinking. In the case of healthcare professionals in contrast tobiostatisticians, the healthcare professional always has the treatment of the individual patient in mind, whilehe biostatistician thinks in populations and overall trends. While it could seem that both viewpoints areequally valid, in reality, healthcare professionals will often do an action in to treat a patient, even though adata analysis conducted be a biostatistician is showing that doing the opposite would be better. It isimportant for people who work in abstract or virtual fields such as statistics or computer programming tonot forget or ignore the limitations on their view of the world and then the actual real world. My presentationaims at highlighting these limitations and thereby making it easier for people belonging to professions withdifferent worldviews to communicate with each other.
